Teenage Dating Timeline

1

This is fascinating:

“The common usage of texting and Facebook has changed the dynamics of teenage dating. The biggest changes can be seen in the courting process where the goal is to ask the other person out on a date. However teenagers still meet potential romantic partners face-to-face.

“Another obvious shift is the fact that changing your Facebook relationship status to “in a relationship” or “single” is now seen by friends as the official declaration.”

I love the progression of meeting someone to eventual (hopefully) Facebook status change!

Are the days gone where two people meet face to face, then continue to foster connection and budding romance over dates? Rather than “checking up on someone’s profile page” and “Googling” their name now?

Ranked Methods of Communication for Teens

Ranked Methods of Communication for Teens

  1. Meet in person = 58%
  2. Texting = 28%
  3. Talking on mobile phone = 5%
  4. Facebook = 5%
  5. Talking on the home phone, email, Twitter = 1%

Who would have thought that the majority of teenagers want to communicate face-to-face instead of through technology?

I wonder if technology has provided a greater sense of communication and connection with friends when the opportunity to be face-to-face is not available via texting or Facebook?

What do you think this research might indicate?

Setting Expectations in Middle School Ministry

1

As a middle school pastor who manages a number of 6th, 7th and 8th grade students each week, I know that our list of rules grows by the week. If you want to see if you have any holes in your policies, just place some middle school students in the middle of your experiment and they take care of things pretty quickly!

Story: Toddler Denial via EpicParent.tv

I love stories! They have the capacity to call forth all kinds of emotions. Stories can make you cry, laugh, scream, even change behavior.

Here is one such story that any seasoned parent will appreciate:

“Why is it that kids will do just about anything in their capacity not to admit to certain things? It’s like they’d rather be attacked by a pack of angry trolls than to state the obvious. I don’t know about you, but my little sprouts flat out refuse to EVER acknowledge that they have to pee, that they’re tired, or that they need a dang Kleenex.”

Two Men and a Strange Message | Cornelius and Peter [video]

1

In Main Street, we show succinct video clips of Bible stories fairly often. This video was very helpful for summarizing a very complicated story with far-reaching implications.

Prior to showing this video I had “taught” through the implications and the story of Cornelius and Peter. This took a little over 10 minutes and it got a little head-y. Toward the end, one boy said:

“Do you have a video about this? Can we watch that?”

Yes… we do!

Cornelius and Peter

2

The story of Cornelius and Peter is super important. It is the crux of the realization that God’s kingdom is available to whole world instead of just the Jewish people.

Jews are God’s special people for the expressed purpose of showing the world what God is like and being living examples of the kind of humanity God wants the world to live. Israel had had this vocation for quite some time (all the way back to the Exodus… even the patriarch Abraham).

To a Jew the world was divided into two categories: Jews and non-Jews (or Gentiles).

Peter’s vision of unclean food now being clean and the evidence of the Holy Spirit on Cornelius’ household was a realization for Peter (thus the whole, young Jesus movement) that Jesus died and rose again not just for God’s special people, Israel, but actually the entire world.

This application of the efficacy of Jesus sacrifice has huge implications from this point forward, not the very least being Gentiles can be saved from judgment, too!!

Is the Gospel Really Good News?

1

This quote from Paul Martin really speaks to whether we believe the Gospel in and of itself is “good news”:

When we, for whatever reason, think that the gospel in itself isn’t attractive, we have lost sight of our faith. Using entertainment to dress up our faith or baiting outreach with gimmicks shows an individual loss of the need for the good news.

Can the Gospel of Jesus Christ stand by itself? Or do we need to “dress” it up?

There are 3 kinds of rocks
