Defying Gravity // Minute to Win It Game

0

How to Play “Defying Gravity”:

Two balloons per participant. We found that color-matching balloons really helped! We also made it a contest between three people to try to keep the 2 balloons afloat for the whole 60 seconds.

We modified “Defying Gravity” from Minute to Win It so it was doable for the Main Street participants.

Shoe Fly Shoe // Game

0

How to Play “Shoe Fly Shoe”:

All you need is a pair of shoes (which most everyone wears to places) and an elevated flat surface (table, chair, bench, etc). Have the participants step away from the flat surface at an appropriate and pre-determined distance.

First one to get their shoe on the flat surface wins!

This is a modified version of “Shoe Fly Shoe” on Minute To Win It and we did it at @ Main Street.

Movin’ On Up // Game

How to Play “Movin’ On Up”:

20 plastic cups per contestant. One of the 20 cups should be a different color.

This is a race against another person to see who can pull the one-colored-cup to the top first.

This game is modified from Minute To Win It and we did it @ msy.

The Gospel | Knotty Knot

0

I was reading a children’s book about the Gospel to Sari the other day and afterwards I read the foreword which was addressed to parents. The author encouraged parents to read and re-read, review, and ask questions about the Gospel.

In that moment I was mentally reviewing how many times we teach and review the Gospel in our children and youth ministries @ Hayward Wesleyan. Not very often. I was convicted about this and expressed to a close ministry partner my thoughts and how we need to weave sharing both the simplicity and the power of the Gospel in concrete and creative ways.

The Gospel doesn’t just need to be a one time thing. It needs to be something that convicts and challenges all of us to live in light of the suffering, sacrifice, and right-side-up life (that often feels like living upside-down) of Christ.

Therefore, we are going to centralize and repeat the teaching and proclamation of the Gospel in Followers, Main Street, and msy.

A couple of nights later, my friend and fellow small group leader, Dave Dixon shared the Gospel using a particular knot he calls the “knotty knot” and John 3:16 @ msy.

Temptations Middle School Students Face

This past Wednesday @ Middle School Youth (Hayward Wesleyan Church) we started a new series called: “Tempting Stuff.”

One of the questions posed to the students in their small group was:

What are some temptations that middle school students face?

In an effort to bring out to the whole group what was being shared in the small groups, I grabbed the white board and recorded the students responses to this question.

Here it is:

Jesus Raises Lazarus Back to Life

We stepped back into LIVE acting the story this past Sunday. Jesus raising Lazarus back from the dead has a lot of action in it that makes it perfect for involving the students in the re-telling of the story.

Quote about “Standing Still”

It seems like it’s worth a look at the words “sloth” or “lazy/laziness” in the book of Proverbs to see what God has to say about “standing still” and what excessive free time seems to do to a person.

Resurrection of Lazarus // Sock Puppet Theater

We’ve been recording our Main Street Teachings for over 4 years now. If you’re aware of how we cycle through the stories of the Bible every three years, then you’ll realize that the stories we are currently doing have a digital record from the three years prior.

The fun part of is that it’s difficult to “out-do” yourself from time to time. For instance, three years ago, our intern Kristen Kingsolver (now Carpenter), Pastor Tim Young and myself recorded a sock puppet show for the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. I think I’m going to show it along with some fresh teaching thoughts this coming Sunday. It’s a short video that’s worth a viewing!

The guys over at BrookwoodStudents have done a couple of “implications” videos in which they “critique” pop songs in a humorous way. Our msy students find these hilarious!

Definition of Discipleship according to Timothy Paul Jones

0

Discipleship: A personal and intentional process in which one or more Christians guide unbelievers or less-mature believers to embrace and apply the gospel in every part of their lives. Discipleship is a process that includes personal profession of faith in Jesus Christ, as he has been revealed to us in Scripture. Discipleship involves developing perspectives and practices that reflect the mind of Christ. The gospel, expressed and applied in the context of the community of faith, is the center point of discipleship; conformity to Jesus Christ is the goal of discipleship; ‘spiritual development’ and ‘Christian formation’ describe progress toward this goal.
