Jacob’s Dream and Marriage

Jacob’s Dream and Marriage

Genesis 29:1— 30:24

Esau is after Jacob. If everything that was rightfully yours was stolen from you, you’d be pretty upset. Jacob had lied and deceived and tricked his father, Isaac, into giving him all the rightful blessings of the firstborn son to him instead of Esau. Esau, understandably, is kind of upset! Jacob catches wind of Esau’s anger and runs. Under advice from his mother Rebekah, Jacob flees to the house of his uncle Laban.

On his way to Laban’s place, Jacob had a dream…

Jacob and His Brother Esau

Jacob and His Brother Esau

Genesis 25:19-34; 27:1-41

Isaac and Rebekah were married when Isaac was forty years old. Rebekah, however, was not able to have children “because she was barren” (Gen 25:21). Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife’s womb and the Lord answered his prayer. Rebekah became pregnant. It was a very unique pregnancy though. Inside Rebekah there was two babies that “jostled each other within her” (Gen 25:22). Rebekah asked the Lord what was going on and the Lord said:

“Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger” (Gen 25:23).

This prophecy from the Lord would prove to come true in the coming years of these two boy’s lives.

Isaac Marries Rebekah

Isaac Marries Rebekah

Genesis 24:1-67

Abraham was getting very old and his son Isaac did not have a wife. So, Abraham sent a servant on a mission to find Isaac a mate. Abraham was very specific: “I want you to swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living, but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac” (Gen 24:3-4). The servant then took off for northwest Mesopotamia near where Abraham’s father took the family—Haran.

Sacrifice of Isaac

Sacrifice of Isaac

Genesis 22:1-19

“Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, ‘Abraham!’
‘Here I am,’ he replied.
“God said, ‘Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of
Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you
about'” (Gen 22:1-2).

What a late night jolt! Can you imagine getting this disturbing message in the middle of the night? And what do you do? Do you follow though with it? Do you question whether or not the message was really from the Lord God? Do you talk with your wife, the child’s mother, about it?

Birth of Isaac

Birth of Isaac

Genesis 21:1-21

This story is very simple, yet extremely powerful. Abraham and Sarah had a son and they named him Isaac. While that may seem very normal and uneventful, let me fill you it on the back story.

Abraham and Sarah were around 100 years old and 90 years old, respectively. They were ancient! When Abraham learned that he was going to have a son in his old age from the Lord, he laughed. And when Sarah heard from the Lord that she was going to give birth to a son in her old age, she laughed. No wonder the son’s name was Isaac, which means “he laughs!”

In addition, the Lord God, the God of heaven and earth, had spoken to Abraham and had promised him a son. This son would be the first in a long line of descendants that would rival the number of stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. The birth of Isaac meant that God had indeed been faithful to the promise He had made to Abraham.

Sodom and Gomorrah

Sodom and Gomorrah

Genesis 18:1—19:29

One day while Abraham was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day, he saw three men standing nearby. He went to them humbly and asked if he may serve them, give them something to eat and refresh them. The three visitors graciously accepted.

The three visitors asked Abraham where his wife was. In the tent was Abraham’s reply. “Then the Lord said, ‘I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son'” (Gen 18:10). Sarah, who was inside the tent heard this statement. “So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, ‘After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?'” (Gen 18:12). The promised son is coming…

Meanwhile, the men got up to leave and the Lord turned aside to Abraham and said: “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? …The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know” (Gen 18:17, 20-21).

God’s Covenant with Abraham

God’s Covenant with Abraham

Genesis 15:1-21

There was a problem. Abram and Sarai did not have any children. Any blessing from God would pass on to a servant in their household. But God already had that problem thought through. “…a son coming from your own body will be your heir. Look up at the heavens and count the stars—if indeed you can count them. So shall your offspring be” (Gen 15:4-5).

The Lord issued another promise to Abram: you and your wife will have a son and your descendants will be like the stars in the heavens. Wow! That’s a lot of descendants! And what did Abram think? “Abram believed the Lord, and he credited to him as righteousness” (Gen 15:6).

Abram’s belief and faith in the Lord’s promise made him a part of the special people of God.

Call of Abraham

Call of Abraham

Genesis 12:1—14:24

Up to this point in the story of Genesis, the LORD God has been dealing with mankind on a global, worldwide scale. Chapter 12 is the turning point in the story. It signals the end of the prologue (introduction) to the story and focuses on a person.

And so begins the story of God interacting with a certain group of people for the sake of the world.

“I will make you into a great nation
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you.”

Tower of Babel

Tower of Babel

Genesis 11:1-9

Thus far in the story, human beings have been thwarting the Lord God, our Creator, from the beginning of time—Adam and Eve’s disobedience, the murder of Abel by Cain, and the worldwide Flood in response to rampant evil. Things aren’t looking good for a turn-around.

Noah and the Flood

Noah and the Flood

Genesis 6:1—9:19

Things are just getting worse. First, Adam and Eve disobey God’s one rule dooming all of mankind to a hereditary problem—sin. Then they have two boys, one of whom kills the other out of jealousy. This sin problem is quickly spiraling out of control. Adam and Eve have more children and then their kids have more children. Mankind had begun to proliferate the earth. However…

Cain and Abel

Cain and Abel

Genesis 4:1-26

Sin—it has horrible, destructive consequences. Adam and Eve disobeyed God and now the rest of humanity will suffer from this evil called sin. Adam and Eve co-created (procreated) more humans (made in the image of God). Their first child was named Cain—meaning, brought forth or acquired. Eve said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man” (Gen 4:1). “Later,” the Bible says, “she [Eve] gave birth to his brother Abel” (Gen 4:2).

And this is the story of Cain and Abel…
