Larry the Sheep Guy Visits and Shares His Story (video)

0

A little over 3 years ago, when we were in the New Testament (Main Street | Year 3) and started with the Birth of Jesus story, I decided to get in character and tell them a unique kind of Christmas story.

It is tough telling kids the same story over and over again and not bore them. So I took liberty with a sermon entitled: Redneck Christmas by Peter Hiett, and adapted it for the students in Main Street.

I’d thought I would post the fun we had that day… have a look:

Jesus is Tempted

2

Jesus is led into the wilderness by the Spirit (right after he is baptized) and is there (both physically and symbolically) for 40 days and 40 nights. He is hungry, tired and worn. And the devil, the tempter, comes to Jesus in his human weakness and tempts him.

I recently returned from a business trip in which I flew on an airplane. Coupled with some other “flight” experiences, I use the analogy of the wild blue wilderness in the sky to illustrate some practical aspects of life and temptation.

Quotes from Kids in Followers #6

During Followers 2010-2011, the students interacted with phrases, verses and Bible stories. On the last day of Followers, we had the students write down some practical applications of actually practicing these principles in real life. This series “Quotes from kids” will share what the kids wrote:

Say it Phrase: Choosing the wrong friends will drag you down, so choose the right friends to hang around.

Say it Verse: Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble. Proverbs 13:20

Quotes:

  • Smiling because I have friends that love Jesus
  • Talk to Mom about new friends
  • Pick friends that love Jesus and are nice to others
  • See if they believe in Jesus and God
  • Don’t play with people who bully
  • If you play with people who do bad things you will do bad things
  • See if they are nice to people
  • Talk nice to them and see if they are nice back
  • Say hello
  • Play with nice people
  • Choose friends who serve others
  • Love them
  • Choose friends that are nice to people

The Essence of Human Nature

0

I like to frontload rules and expectations with students to stave off, on the front-end, any negative or unwanted behavior. Generally, it works. There is this thing called “human nature,” however, that gets in the way!

One of the rules we have to mention at the beginning of a lock-in is to not blow out the pilot lights on the gas stove in the kitchen. We have to talk about this because the students think they are doing the church a favor by blowing it out for us! However, mentioning this random rule causes the students to be really curious about a behavior they might have been unaware of before… tricky line in communicating rules and when not to communicate rules…

John the Baptist and Jesus’ Baptism

0

This week we find ourselves interacting with John the Baptist (JTB), the cousin of Jesus. The Main Street students grabbed their Bibles, turned to Mark 1, and read about who JTB was, what JTB talked about, and who JTB baptized. Talk about a passionately, wild man of God.
