Our Church Bell

0

When our church moved from its old location to the new one several years ago, the church bell came over as well but ended up in storage for a while. A special “bell” house was built between the church building and the highway to house the bell and keep it operational at designated times.

It’s funny, but a student the other day asked me what was in that thing (the bell house) and I told him, “A bell.” He asked if it worked, and I told him I had no idea. I think it did work at one time, but hadn’t heard it ring in a long time.

Well that question wound it’s way to the right people and they set to work to find out why the bell hasn’t rung in a while. Turns out the motor that rotates the bell when assigned was shot and needed to be replaced.

While they were fixing things the other day, I stopped over by the bell house to look inside as I had never seen inside nor the bell. It is huge! I had no idea a really cool, old, huge bell was inside. I had thought that it was a “wimpy” sort of bell, but this thing took a logging truck/rig to move and place it in its spot.

I was told that the bell has a date on it of 1906. Wow. That’s an old bell. I have a new-found respect for that weird looking bell house that sits on our property now.

Gymnastics is Starting Soon (for Barbies too!)

0

My two girls love gymnastics, and they are excited for another year of tumbling, somersaults, bridges, rings, balance beam, tucking, jumping, and laughing. Hayward has a great gymnastics program with some incredible people who both love the kids and the sport.

Sari is so excited she thought she would help her Barbies learn the splits! When I came home from work the other day, she had these lined up along the fireplace. Creative, eh?

Quotes from Kids in Followers #2

0

During Followers 2010-2011, the students interacted with phrases, verses and Bible stories. On the last day of Followers, we had the students write down some practical applications of actually practicing these principles in real life. This series “Quotes from kids” will share what the kids wrote:

Say it Phrase: When others’ tempers start to rise, turn down the heat with a cool surprise.

Say it Verse: A gentle answer turns anger away. But mean worlds stir up anger. Proverbs 15:1

Quotes:

  • Take a breath and count to 3
  • Smile, walk away, pray for them, act like it didn’t happen
  • Ignore and take a deep breath
  • Talk quietly
  • Walk away
  • Turn around and talk to them
  • Hunt on your own
  • Count down from 10
  • Tell them it’s okay
  • Let them talk about why they are angry
  • Instead of yelling back at someone just take a breath
  • Act calmly when people start yelling
  • Pray: “God help me calm down”
  • Turn the other cheek
  • Yell into a pillow
  • Ask for courage from God
  • Think before you yell back
  • Talk to them kindly

Stop The Candy Shop (video)

0

These are not fun conversations to have, but they are necessary. The video embedded above is about child sex trafficking. It is done with taste and class and depicts an escalating problem in our modern society that we should not tolerate!

About the video: “The Candy Shop”:

Jimmy Balcom’s new job selling newspapers is a God-send to a kid working hard to help his family survive during the depression. But then Jimmy figures out what’s happening in the candy shop across the street. And he is confronted with a choice that no twelve-year-old should ever have to face. Giving his family a better life, or keeping his soul.

What Does a “Kingdom of God” Type Response Look Like?

0

It’s pretty difficult to respond to things like Christ in this world. The action often looks like we are letting people “walk on us.”

Bill Hybels @ the 2011 Global Leadership Summit that the Willow Creek Association puts on had a chance to enact a kingdom, Christ-like response to a last-minute speaker cancellation. Honestly, when I heard about the speaker who cancelled and why he cancelled, I passed instant judgment and did not respond like Hybels. After watching this video I feel chastened and reminded that as Jesus-like people in this world, we are called to exercise “other-wordly” actions that exemplify what God intended this world to look like instead of what we want this world to look like.

You’ve Got Problems?! I’ll Give You REAL Problems!

0

“Puppy love is very real to the puppy!”

Ever heard this quote before? My youth pastor said this once and I’ve never forgot it.

Meaning: the experiences and problems in our lives our very real to us in the moment.

To a first-time middle school student, the start of a school year might seem daunting:

  • new routine
  • new teachers
  • new social expectations
  • new place to sit in the cafeteria
  • mastering locker combinations

These problems are very REAL problems! To a student’s parents they might pale in comparison to pressure to raising a family, paying a mortgage, juggling work, free time and family time, etc.

The temptation for a lot of us adults when confronting the “drama” that our teenagers and children are involved in is to down play it. And while it is sound “adult” advice, it doesn’t help the student. Their problems are very REAL and IMPORTANT problems! As parents we need to step into their shoes (I know it’s difficult to remember back to middle school, elementary years, or the terrible 2’s!) and help them navigate these very REAL problems with perspective and care.

So the next time your daughter is involved in some sort of drama on Facebook, or your son is talking about problems in his homeroom with this one boy… take a moment, step out of your world into theirs, and ask some questions and give some thoughts… you’ll be amazed at the outcome!

Did You Know You’re Probably Tying Your Shoes Wrong?

0

Like the speaker says fairly quickly in the video, I thought if there was one thing that I had mastered in my life it would be the ability to tie my shoes. But, as you will discover when you watch this 3-minute TED talk, you might have been tying them wrong all along! I was!

When I showed my wife, Amanda, this video, we both tried the “new” method. Turns out Amanda has been tying her shoes “right” all along!

About this talk:

Terry Moore found out he’d been tying his shoes the wrong way his whole life. In the spirit of TED, he takes the stage to share a better way.

Where Children Sleep

0

A gallery of images @ LIFE Magazine illustrates the juxtaposition of “Where Children Sleep” in the world.

It’s difficult to say that where some children sleep is “sad” because that is the reality of the conditions they live in. They don’t think of it in the same terms and conditions we do. We as Americans have a particularly unique vantage point, wherein we think that it is “sad.” I imagine that even though these living conditions are tough, most of these children would consider themselves happy.

It is telling, however, when you see the “extravagance” of where some American children sleep set against the backdrop of where other children in the world sleep.

In Anticipation of Hurricane Irene

0

Normally you would think this was a creative prank from one competing hotel to another, or maybe some college students executing a fraternal initiation.

Not so. This is an intentional act:

Outdoor furniture sits in a pool at the Hilton hotel keep it from blowing away in preparation for Hurricane Irene on August 26 in Ocean City, Maryland. Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan has ordered a mandatory evacuation for thousands of residents and visitors to leave the ocean front community and Maryland’s Governor O’Malley has declared a state of emergency as Hurricane Irene moves up the eastern seaboard.

What? x3 Then agree!

0

I sometimes do this with my kids when I can’t understand what they are saying… but I agree cautiously, while wondering what I just agreed to!

I also sometimes do this @ church when people are talking to me but my mind is elsewhere. It sound bad, but with so many people vying for your attention, it is difficult (at least for me) to be fully present with every conversation.

And just like the website says: “I Can Totally Relate!”

Be Here Now (video)

A while back I heard about a sermon on silence in which a teacher did not say a word. On the screen behind him, the slides “spoke” the message about silence. It’s teaching about a topic using the very construct of the message itself. That combination of intentionality in content as well as delivery can be very powerful in communication.

Blaine Hogan did just that in the video below, entitled “Be Here Now.”
